Which CPU would you get assuming your not going to upgrade your CPU again for 3 to 4 years. Either the E8500 Dual Core at 3.16ghz or the quad Q9550 at 2.8ghz. And the general use would be gaming/video encoding/video editing/surfing the web/.

Of course the Q9550. But it also cost much more, so it's not fair comparasion. :p

I would get the Q9550, if I was forced to accept your supposition.

However, the suppostion itself makes little sense.
Why would you not upgrade for 4-5 Years?

Buy for today, not 4-5 years.

If you by something such as the Q6600 instead of the Q955, you will save about $300 which will give you more than enough money to upgrade again in about 2 years.

Anything you buy today will be seriously outdated in about 1-2 years.

cause im not made of money and i cant afford to upgrade yearly. My current system is about 5 years old(cpu&motherboard) and has done pretty well for me, but its been starting to get slow on games. so time for upgrade. the only thing i will probably upgrade when i put my new system together over the next 3 to 4 years will be video card

Depending on timing, it may cost less to upgrade than getting an ultra-high-end system now and try to last it for 5 years.

Id have to agree... something like an e2200 and 8800GT system now, and the equivelent 2 years from now would serve better than a single CPU and gpu combo for 4-5 years and cost less (more than likely)
