The little window box defaults all new downloads to desktop and cant be
changed to go to "Downloads".

There must be a way?

No I didnt. I recently reformatted, and the small download box came up
when I was installing new programs..
I created a download file of my own in C drive, but the installations are
going to the desktop. I tried to click on the options of the small
download file (which says desktop) - but it wont accept anything. I've
never had this problem before, the new installations have always gone
directly to the download file I have created.

OK try this. Cut and paste everything between the lines below and paste it
into notepad. Save the file as downloadreset.reg and save it to the desktop.
Make sure you change the save as.......drop down box to all files. Once the
file is saved then double click on it to merge it into the registry. Reboot
and try it.

Begin cut below this line
====================================================================================

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\Restrictions]
"NoSelectDownloadDir"=dword:00000000

====================================================================================
End cut above this
line

Thanks, I did everything you said - the first download I received after
rebooting, still showed "Desktop" on the download window. I'll wait till
I download something else, and get back to you.

Many thanks

It will always say desktop until you change it by selecting another folder.

even when you choose "Save As" from the download web site in the download
dialogue box?, doesn't it prompt with the download box, it should give you
an option of where to save it, instead of automatically going straight to
the download process, because you have to "Save" it somewhere for it to
download.

ie, something like this:
http://upload.mcgill.ca/ncs/msoffice_8-download_dialogue_box.gif and it
should prompt with something similar to:
http://greenwood.cr.usgs.gov/energy/WorldEnergy/OF97-470K/graphic/web_images/savescreen.jpg

Ive fixed it up now Andrew thanks. Just can't remember how I did it. But
I do recall that the download box would NOT let me save it there.

Thanks, anyway - I do appreciate your help.

Now I remember. I have Mozilla (firefox) - and its slightly different.
My apologies.
