I've just noticed that when I move my mouse around inside my browser window my CPU usage as reported by speedfan and my G15 keyboard jumps up from almost nothing to as high as 40%. Is that normal? I've also started to notice a strange "buzzing" noise from inside the PC when I use the scroll wheel on the mouse in any application.

Is this the good computer in your signature? If so, something is wrong. If I wiggle my mouse a lot on my laptop, it goes to about 10% from its standard 2-4%.

Something sounds fudged on your USB stuff. If you have a lotta stuff connected on USB I'd suggest a hub with it's own PSU. If I connect too many devices to my USB ports on my laptop, the screen gets weird....using the hub, no wierdies.

I know that moving the mouse wildly over animated icons and links uses 40% of my Pentium D, and the same motion over an empty desktop uses 2%. On one of my computers scrolling the mouse causes the computer to read from hard drive making a quarter second long sound.

What mouse are you using?

I am talking about the PC in my sig

My mouse is a Logitech G15

I have USB Camera, USB Keyboard, and USB Mouse connected.

I also noticed that I get the noise when moving around the graphs displayed by RivaTuner. I'm concerned about the noise because I have only noticed similar behavior from a failing P.S. on a P.C. at work.

First you need to pin point what is making the sound. Unplug all case fans (you may test them individually to see if its one of them) to quit things down a bit. Have the case opened up so you can put your ear close to every fan and hard drive in the case. Do whatever you need to so that it makes the noise (may need someone to do that while you listen). This should allow you to pin point the source of the sound.

If its a fan make sure its not excessively dirty that can cause them to be out of balance. Maybe you just need to replace it because it is getting ready to quit.

If its your hard dive that is just causing vibrations in you case there are isolators you can buy so that hdd vibrations don't transfer to the case.

Hope that helps

I haven't checked my CPU usage but I was noticing a clicking noise while scrolling last night. I scared me so I tund off the system unhooked everything and opened it up, at which point I thought "wait just why am I looking in here?" hooked it back up. One thing I did was attach the wireless receiver do for my keyboard to the two PS/2 port with an adapter. After which I head no more clicking sound. So it might be a matter of Reducing the number of things you have hooked up to USB.

The G15 is a keyboard not a mouse. Are you using a G9 mouse by chance?

Wow, I must have still been sleeping when I wrote that.

Mouse is G5, keyboard is G15

Yes it's Vista and it's still happening.

It's starting to sound more like a very faint HDD sound.

Just wanted to say that I see on the extremesystems maximus formula thread there are others mentioning the "noise". Some think it's the 'fets on the board. Others think it's the video card. Either way I'm not alone and it seems to be harmless.
