I am looking to build a budget home server. I already have 4x750GB HDs, external enclosure and a software RAID card for RAID5.

I am going to build it as AMD [ya I like the underdog], so I am looking for recomendations on a budget file server build. I am thinking less than $400.

Thanks!!!

AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ Brisbane 2.6GHz

$382.96+S&H...
Still need a case...i think I have a DVD drive around. Might recycle my one out the other computer. Its SATA, dual layer....blah blah

Then later I can throw in an AM2+ proc a video card and turn it into a gaming system...

4Gb for $80 (best for a 64 bit OS)

Trancend is buggy, 4 builds with it, all 4 biulds had mem issues, later used G.Skill, no problems then.
(typicaly I stick with G.Skill, or Geil. Fewer compatibility issues)

I'd personally stick with the 2350 (less power = less heat to dissapate)
about the same price as the 5000+, but for a server/moderate gaming, it should be a little better. (and the 2350 comes with a HSF)

good find on the board tho. (looks like I may upgrade my HTPC soon)

You need to specify what you want out of your "home server". If it is supposed to be just a file server then heck, get the cheapest stuff you can buy that is good quality.

I.e. a celeron/sempron, cheapest mobo you can find with decent reviews, onboard video, and an onboard NIC, 512 MB RAM. Since this PC will be on probably 24/7, get an Earthwatts PSU or any other with a very high efficiency.

A file server doesn't need much at all. Mine has a socket A sempron 2200+ with 256 MB RAM and it works just peachy.
