hey

i have this setup:

E8400 stock clock and cooler
HD 4870
2GB Corsair Dominator DDR2 at stock 1066mhz and 5-5-5-18 timings

i was thinking about getting the OCZ vendetta 2 because:

- no need to remove mobo from case, and considering i dont have any experience dealing with hardware, i wan't to do as "little" as possible

- from reviews it seems like it does its job at keeping the CPU cool very well, without being too expensive

im aiming at a 420mhz FSB speed (~3.8ghz), and underclocking the RAM to whatever speed it would be necessary to have a 4:5 FSB:DRAM ratio and decrease its timings to 4-4-4-12

you think its a good cooler for the job, good option?

also, will this shorten the life of the CPU? cause i wasn't planning on getting a new one for... i dunno, 4 years?

btw, if you need to know, my power supply is a Corsair VX 550w, im using Vista 64-bit and my mobo is Asus P5Q.

I'd always suggest removing the Mobo from the case. The pins are known for not locking right and the only way to make sure is to remove the mobo and look at the bottom. Also, some mobos have issues with caps etc being too close to the HS, you can't tell with the mobo in the case.

Your stuff and money, my suggestion.

Yes the OCZ Vendetta2 is a very good aftermarket HSF. I am using its little brother(the Vendetta 92mm) on a E8400 and at idle the temps are in the 21 celius range for both cores.

Since the Vendetta2 is bigger and uses a 120mm fan, make sure you have the Height clearance for Case. When you put Side panel back on, if not good for the Vendetta 92mm fan one. Also you should get the XIGMATEK ACK-I7751 Retention Bracket, this way you can bolt it down instead on uses the stock push/pin method.

My condolences on the Asus P5Q.

Get the XIGMATEK HDT-S1284EE

Go to the websites and look for the term Thermal Resistance. The lower the better.
If they don't give the thermal resistance don't give them your money.

um, my idea is that he will open the side of the case and not having any idea of what the difference between a graphics card and RAM is. so..
