Hi Everyone,
I'm building an editing rig and have put this together.
Let me know what you think. Do you see any incompatibilities?
I'm planning on OCing in the 2.8 to 3.0 territory.
Thanks,
I'd get board that doesn't take DDR3 ram. It's expensive and I really don't think it's performance justifies the the extra cost involved. This will change with the new platform coming out, but with what you can do with DDR2 for the price, it's just not worth it. Of course this coming from an old, frugal, bang for your buck type guy.
Don't think you'll need that PSU, take a look at this one;
http://www.buy.com/prod/corsair-62 [...] 70718.html This is a good cooler, you haven't heard much about it yet, but you will; http://www.jab-tech.com/Xigmatek-H [...] -4097.html

Opinions are like asses, everybody has one.
I like the PSU... that's one I would recommend too.
I'm not quite sure I like the Xigmatek or not. I really dont like the fact that it comes with plastic clips that mount to the motherboard. I like solid metal clips or better yet a mount under the board like my thermalright ultra.
is an Asus Maximus extreme board necessary? i mean, if you're trying for SLI, you'll be stuck, as that board doesn't support it: it only supports crossfire. also, if you don't want a second GPU altogether, why not just go and get a P35DS3L, and an 8800GTS, that way you can save some $, and not get tempted...
also, ditch a Raptor as your boot drive: they aren't all that fast anymore: the new seagate 7200.11 drives perform within milliseconds of the raptor, but are bigger. in the same vein, you could save a bit of money by only getting 2 HDDs and adding the others later, but that's up to you.
Zalman: get the 9700LED instead, or better yet, a Thermaltake Ultra 120 or that fancy Xigmatek cooler that's all the rave these days. If you're in budget category (which i don't think you are) get an Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro.
otherwise, follow the recommendations made in this thread and you'll be laughing
Great advice!
Yeah, I don't need SLI. I would however like to have a 4 monitor setup soon. Any recommendations on getting that done? Does the 8800GT support 4 monitors or should I just get another 8800GT?
Another vote for the Xigmatek. There's a review at XBitlabs if you want. That thing gives amazing value for the money.
You can't get the DS3L, it's limited to 4 SATA devices and you've listed a truckload of hard drives there. It also allows a single video card (unless you add a GeForce 6200 PCI card), so only 2 monitors, not 4. The GA-P35-DS3P or GA-P35-DS4 or GA-X38-DS4 would be fine though. Just add 4 GB of DDR2-800 and you end up with $300 instead of $700 for mobo+RAM.
If this is an editing machine (not gaming), why the 8800GT and not something cheaper and quieter and cooler like the 9600GT or even HD 3850?
I have WD7500AAKS disks and I'm very impressed with them. They are better than the Raptor for editing large videos. I don't know why you'd even bother with the Raptor - so you can boot Windows once a day in 20 seconds instead of 30 seconds?
All advise is great IMO, as usual. I have the Silencer 750 and would suggest it along with one of Aevm's boards and Chuck's cooler with 2 x 2 GB DDR 2 800.

This system is primarly going to be used for editing.
I was hoping to use the new x38 chipset with DDR2 memory and then maybe upgrade to DDR3 when prices come down. Are there any boards out there that can do that.
I'm also tempted to wait for the x48 boards, however I'm not sure what the gain would be.
Any suggestions?
However, I wouldn't bother. I got a GA-P35C-DS3R myself. It has 4 GB of DDR2-800 right now, upgradeable to 8 GB, and it also supports DDR3 (but only up to 4 GB). My next upgrade will be to add 4 GB of DDR2, that would help a lot more than replacing 4 GB of DDR2 with 4 GB of DDR3. You can't use both DDr2 and DDr3 at the same time, at least with the P35C board. Also, the GA-P35C-DS3R overclocks worse than the GA-P35-DS3R, and the only difference is the DDR3 support, otherwise they are identical boards. I don't know if it works that way for X38 too, but why risk it...
I wouldnt bother with SLI or crossfire if you plan to not game. It's not worth it!
I have the PCPC silencer and am happy. It powers a lot of fans and two 8800gt's.
My buddy just bought the foxconn x38a and loves it too. He swears by it. It's a great overclocker and has a lot of options including the upgrade to DDR3. According to some reviews it performs better than most with DDR3!
I would consider the X38A with 1 3870. Then you can figure out four monitors later.
Yeah. However, I think it's something like $300. If that's still true, I'd rather get a second 3870 than the Matrox thing. It would be cheaper and it could also serve for Crossfire. Even if the OP doesn't play games, he might want to sell this PC some day and it would help.
What makes this board a WS class board? I'm really digging the features. Any other opinions on going with this board? ASUS P5E WS Professional LGA 775 Intel X38 ATX Intel Motherboard http://www.newegg.com/product/prod [...] 6813131236
