Tom's Hardware > Forum > Storage > General Storage > USB to IDE Cable Adapter - do they require power adapters?

Hi:

I can buy a USB 2.0 to IDE/SATA Cable Adapter including external power adapter (for SATA Devices) from Tigerdirect for $20.00 or a basic USB 2.0 to IDE Cable Adapter on ebay for $5.00. I'm only planning to use it on an IDE drive. Is it necessary to have a power adapter to run the cable on an IDE drive? What about for an SATA? I'm not averse to spending the extra money - but why bother if the power adapter is unnecessary.

Thanks in advance for any help you might be able to give.

They don't state the number of pins - but they both say they work for both 2.5" and 3.5" hard drives.

So, from what you suggest, I'll need the power adapter for a 3.5" (which is what I have)?

If that's the case, I obviously will buy the one with the power adapter.

Thanks for the prompt response to the first post.
