So I bought an XFX 9600GT from Newegg just last Tuesday and I got it yesterday. I didn't realize that it required a 6-pin power connector, and much to my chagrin, my trusty Antec TrueBlue powersupply does not have one.
I'm not really all that eager to upgrade my PS just for my video card. If the PS runs 50 bucks, that'll be like a 33% price increase for my video card, and I'm much too frugal to do that unless I have to.
My question is just how bad would it be to use a 4-pin Molex converter -> 6-pin connector? There's a pamphlet that came with the card that specifically says not to use a converter, but it's actually talking about using 2 converters for larger cards that use 2 6-pin power cables. It doesn't mention anything about a single 6-pin connecter.
If my hopes are dashed and you all think I have to upgrade my PS, where's the average sweet spot? On the one hand, if I'm upgrading my power supply, I'll want it to last me another 3-4 years just like this one did, but on the other, I really am not eager to spend $120+ on a steenkin' power supply.
it would not be so bad. use a molex connector from 2 different chains out of the power supply to power the 6 pin converter and you'll be set. power supplies around $50 would do as a replacement, even cheaper crappy ones have the 6 pin as well, but dont sweat it.
Cheaper crappy ones have the six-pin connector to make it easier to overload them by putting over 60% of their label rating on them; they aren't for powering graphics cards.
