i wanted to install fresh xp on 160 GB sata HDD. is there a particular limit for xp partition. if i make a large space partition for xp will it speed up or not.

Vanilla XP, ie, prior to Service Pack 1, had a size limitation of 137GB. But to have a pre-SP1 disc is extremely rare nowadays, so you should be fine to use the whole drive.

You shouldn't see any performance loss or gain by using multiple partitions.

Not necessarily. 160GB effectively means about 149GB. You ought to be good with 50on C: and 100 on D. I have 100GB for my C: with Vista on it.
