I have read that the Paging File works more effectively if it is transferred to a different Hard Drive than the default Drive (C.
My PC is an HP Pavilion with a 400GB Hard Drive that has two partitions - the normal operating one (C, and a D: (Recovery) partition.
I also have an HP Pocket Media USB Drive (J which I leave installed at all times. I transferred my Paging File from Drive C: to the PMD (J, but now I do not know how to check that it really exists on Drive J:, nor how to adjust the settings.
Yeah, I agree that your best option is to leave the Paging File on the C: drive. Just about any external drive will be slower than an internal because of the speed of the connection from mobo to external case (true eSATA and Firewire 800 are fast enough, though). The reason for putting it on a second HDD is: that way all traffic to / from the Paging File goes through a separate HDD controller and connection, while the C: drive is still working. But in your case with two Partitions on the same physical unit, the same controller port and cables are handling both the C: and D: drives, so there is NO advantage to placing it on D:.
I"m intrigued, though, that you say you "transferred the Paging file...", but yet you do not know how to check it or change the settings. Those operations are all in the same place! In Win XP, you get there by: Start ... Control Panel ... System, choose the Advanced tab, then the Performance Settings button, the Advanced tab, and finally! the Virtual Memory Change button. This will show you the current location and settings, and allow you to change them. After doing that you'll have to reboot to start using the new settings.
