I have a HP a1730n standard configuration so I decide to upgrade the video card with a EVGA Geforce 8600 GTS ssc, from the information in Tiger Direct the card has a minimum of 300 watts requirement cover more or less by my computer 300 watts power supply. But when the card arrived the box says a minimum 400 watts power supply, so I call EVGA tech support and they recommend a 500 watts power supply.

So anyone recommend a good quality PSU that will fit this case

8600gts is not a powerful card. 300watts may be enough, depending on its 12v rating and what other hardware you're running on. Put it in and stress test it, and see if it's stable. There is no reason to pour more money than you need to into a bad PC.

As long as you do not try to oc the card any more than it is all ready. You should be fine. The wife has the a1200y with the same power supply and it was enough for my old 8600GT that I oc'd with no problems. But it would not hurt to get a better one soon before that one dies on you.

what type of power supply do you have, mATX? there are some quality ones that go over 400w, that or drive bay power supply but i believe your system may not have a second 5.25" bay. That really limits your options.

Another forum user stated your system can handle a 7600 GT just fine, so you may be ok.

im sure a 8600gts will run fine with a 300watter. but dont be surprised when it cluncks out. but hey if its a well made PSU it might last a whiel yet.

have you already bought that card?
