Hello all:
I am currently running a 19" LCD widescreen monitor with the Intel onboard graphics thru a PCIE ADD2 card via DVI cable to the monitor and it has served me well. However, I am about to take the plunge and connect a 24 or 30" LCD monitor which requires higher resolution than possible with my current set-up. I have ordered an AMD/ATI 3650 PCIE graphics card which is supposed to work well for my purpose......I don't do any gaming, just normal stuff with a lot of Media Center oriented usage. I have downloaded the latest Catalyst 8.3 drivers and a copy of the manual for the 3650 graphics card. The instructions say to uninstall any AMD/ATI drivers prior to installing the new drivers. The problem is I am running Vista Ultimate 64-bit and the minute I turn on the pc with the new card installed it will automatically install the Vista built-in drivers before I can install the correct drivers. I am thinking I should just remove the current PCIE ADD2 card, replace it with the AMD/ATI 3650 card and then re-start in "Safe Mode" to prevent Vista from installing any driver for the new card. At that point I would uninstall the Intel Graphics drivers and install the new ATI Catalyst 8.3 software. One problem that may crop up is that after the uninstall of the Intel Graphics drivers I think I will get a message that I must re-start the pc before they will be uninstalled? If I do that the pc will start up and automatically Vista will install the wrong drivers for the new card? How do you install drivers for a new card in Vista then.......it's a constant circle of Vista doing what I don't want. I would sure appreciate someone who can tell me the correct procedure to change my graphics card!
