well my laptop doesn't seem to boot up windows... I only see the mouse pointer every time it boots up... with white as a background... Now, I want to transfer all of the files from that laptop to my PC... can a laptop act as a virtual drive? just like USB connectors...? Is it possible that the laptop can be like a USB drive to transfer files on the PC??? Hope that someone can help me... thanks in advance.

Have you tried booting into 'Safe Mode'? There are many hard drive to USB connectors to hook your laptop drive to your desktop...something like this:

You just need to know how to remove the hard drive...

I assume you mean that the laptop no longer completely boots anything and you want a way to copy the files off the hard drive? Is that correct?

I also assume that the laptop cannot be connected to a LAN - by wire or wirelessly - so that another computer can find and access the files on the laptop hard drive without actually logging on to the laptop at it's keyboard; is that correct?

Yes. In all likelyhood, you are correct. But a few last ditch questions may avoid dismantling the laptop.

you dont have to dismantle anything really its usually 1 screw and the hdd will slide out of its drive bay.
