Help recover my external hdd!

My external hard drive failed, and I need help recovering it. Luckily it's a logical failure, not the dreaded mechanical one. It still shows up in device manager, but not in my computer. I need some kind of free recovery software that can do this and is compatible with windows vista (32bit).

I heard you can recover it if you hook it up internally to your computer as Slave. I don't know if maxtor one touch III mini uses IDE or SATA inside. It uses USB on the outside. Any suggestions?
