Hey folks,

I have a really old computer: single core 2.3ghz cpu, geforce 8600 basic, 1gb ram, etc....

I had a really old 350wt junk psu that came with a junk case, which seemed to be working fine - but I wanted the PSU to be the best I could get, so I bought a PC&C Silencer 610. Overkill for my system, I know, but I wanted reliability when it comes to things drawing power off of my homes electrical lines.

So far, it's been great.... but in two months or so I'll be upgrading.

Someone told me this PSU won't power 2 video cards... my budget for the video card is 300 dollars, and the toms guide said that 2 9600gts was the best value at that price.

Will this psu power 2 cards?

Thanks

610W is enough for any dual-card SLI set up, even if you had a quadcore CPU, so you should have no issue running both video cards. Even a Tri-SLI 8800Ultra system only uses about 680W full load.

:hello: Yes, easily.

Yes the 610 is a very stout 600w PSU, and will easily power 9600GT SLI.

The 9600 GT SLI only draws 79W-137W, so no problem. The Truth About Graphics Power Requirements V2

If you are concerned about the power in your house you may want to invest in a UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply). Make sure the VA and wattage specs are sufficient. More so wattage as the Silencer 610 has active power factor correction.

Thanks for the replies guys.

What about the 'single rail' thing - does that mean it has only 1 hookup for a video card?

Wonderful, thanks for all of the help and time spent making it all crystal clear. Looks like this PSU was a good decision!

No. What that means is the power supply is designed with a single, large rail for all the power it will deliver at 12V, rather than two, or three, or 7, or whatever big number someone decides will make for a shiny box. The main advantage to a single rail design is that you don't have to worry about exceeding the maximum current a given rail can deliver, as there's only one of them, and in your case it can supply a whopping 49A. Power supplies with multiple 12V rails usually require that you connect different rails to your GPUs, since no one rail can power both cards without overloading it.

The other advantage to single rail designs is just the opposite--that is, less power is wasted because it is "trapped" on a rail whose leads are all being used to run low power components. If you're running two HDDs and two optical drives for example, and the rail can supply a total of 18A, but has no free connectors left once everything's connected, it's as if your four drives are using 18A. They might as well; you can't tap the unused power on that rail without splitting the leads.

TL;DR: A single rail design makes the math easy and installation somewhat more foolproof.

Well said.
