I've had a problem with my DVD/CD drives for a while. Some times they won't read a disk at first so I have to eject and put back in, rpm spikes, problem burning CD-Rs. So I've been looking around for a fix. I think maybe it has to do with a driver compatibility problem.

Under Computer management it says Standard Dual Channel PCI IDE Controller and this is the only device that gets detected by the program called " Driver Detective" as out of date. Can some body tell me what this does exactly? I've been searching and found nothing. I also can't find a driver update for it and neither can windows

Some specs I think are relevant:
ASUS M2A-VM - motherboard
Windows XP SP2 - OS
my optical drives are both IDE

How old are they? Sometimes they just get dusty and dirty like everything else and need cleaning, or simply replace them.

One drive is 2years old and doesn't burn CDs no more but will burn dvds. The other drive is about 5years old it reads the CD-Rs fine but it has rpm spikes and most of the time I will go through 5 CDs just to get a working CD burning at 1x.
