WD graph looks like *** where the 15K Seagate looks beautiful.

WD 7200rpm 8meg Cache SATA drive

The WD looks faster overall, but it's obviously putting more strain on itself and on your system. Are these graphs based on tests done after fresh hardware installs?

Its fine. You obviously have something accessing the drive during the scan.

Those tests were done after a fresh install of XP

That's when some other program tried to access the drive. Nothing's wrong with them.
