You can access the system restore from start-->programs-->accessories-->system tools-->system restore.

It sounds like you may have some registry corruption. You may want to download ccleaner, and run the registry tool. You may need to run it several times to fix all the issues.

First, install the program in the link above. The problem may be simple registry problems.

If that doesn't solve it, we can attack this from another direction.

It's free. You can download it from hippo or piriform. Both sites should be listed.

Ok, restart the PC, and tap F8 on startup. Boot into safe mode with command prompt. When you get to the command line, type the following, and press enter.
    %systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe

Usually when you buy an OEM (gateway, HP, Dell) PC, they will come with either a recovery partition, or restore discs.

Did you have a D drive that was mostly full?

Download recuva, and see what it can recover. Though, without a windows disc or recovery partition, there's not much more you can do.

To be safe, you should choose to recover anything it finds.

Try using EASEUS, and see if it gives better results.

However, yes, you may be SOL without a windows disc.

If EASEUS doesn't work, you don't have to get a new PC. You just need to get a copy of XP. If you know someone that has a copy of your version, that will work to do a repair. If not, you just need to get a new XP disc. It's cheaper than a new PC. You just need to do a windows repair.
