Are you booting from the DVD with the windows install cd?

OK now I'm confused. During post it says no HD but you are booting from the windows install CD. Does it enter setup? If you are can you install Windows or does it not see the HDD there either?

It says no hd when I boot w/o the Vista dvd. But when entering setup - the hd is listed under sata1. So I reboot with the Vista dvd and it starts the install...when it gets to "where do you want to install windows," there is no hd listed at all. I tried installing XP just to see if it was the Vista dvd. XP says no hd as well. Thank you so much for helping. I had the hd tested by Altec and they said the hd is fine. Weird! Could the sata controller be defective but still sees the sata hd?

I would say you have a bad mobo. Yes the sata controller could still see the HDD but not be able to make the drive available for installation.
I do have one other question what sata connector are you plugging it into?

What model p5b do you have? Also look in your boot device priority and see if the drive is listed there.

MB is just PB5 - not deluxe. As stated - bios sees the sata hd. Have hd listed as 2nd boot and cd as 1st so as to install Vista.

Ok go into the bios and make sure the disk isn't write protected under IDE configuration, if it's not change to another SATA port, Windows should show all available drives in the system. If it still doesn't see a drive try another drive if you have one and if that doesn't work I'd say your SATA controller or ports are bad.

Had the hd checked at Altecs - it was fine. Asus level 3 support came to the same conclusion - that the ports/controller must be bad. Weird that bios still sees the drive though. RMA to Newegg now.

Thanks for the reply
