Can i hook up sata and pata hard drives on the same system

should be able to if your motherboard has controllers for ATA and SATA devices. Most boards will allow for up to 2 PATA drives which will be attached to the same ribbon and then SATA drives using those cables in the proper controller slot on the MB.

No problem in doing what you suggest. I used to have a computer running one SATA drive and two PATA ones.
