Windows vista does not boot and startup repair finds no problems

Occasionally windows vista hangs upon startup. If I power off and restart Vista recommends going through startup repair. This takes an hour, cannot be interrupted, and finds nothing. I browsed the system event log and found no clues. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to proceed to troubleshoot this problem?

You could turn on boot logging (msconfig) and also check HD for errors.
