I am building a Media PC and I am wondering if all other components are the same if you can help me pick the right processor between these two.

Thanks

AM2+ motherboard with 780g chipset and the A64 X2 3800+... or damn the 5000+ is only $85.

Thanks for your input. I was leaning to AMD.

wait, are you talking about pentium d or pentium dual core?
the later is pretty much a core 2.. i would advise it. It will be significantly faster than the 3800+..

hmm, cant seem to find the 3800+. besides, the 4000+ would be a better choice anyway.

Well the op said a pentium4 dual core so whatever chip he is looking at the amd is the better choice.

What the op should be considering is the pentium dual cores(e2**0 series allendales) Which peform just about the same as the said amd chip.

Do not listen to anybody that says get a AM2+ plus mobo. That is just a pure waste of money. For a low cost media pc there is no need at all to put a 3800x2 a x2 4000 heck any x2 cpu with the lastest amd boards. Thats like buying a intel x48 chipset to run a pentium 4.

The reason they (and I) suggest the 780G board is because it has the BEST current IGP. This allows you to use a smaller CPU for HD and video stuff. The AM2+ ability is a non-issue. Just search for 780G on google and you will find tons of reviews about how good it is at video playback, many using inferior CPUs (single core and low duals).

Old Pentium D which Intel dont make anymore= JUNK!

New Pentium Ds: e2140, e2160, e2180, e2200 will blow away any AMD dual core chip period. These are the same as core2duo but with a smaller cache.

Here is an example:

I also suggest the AMD 780G route as well. Tom's did this article where the 780G played a Blu-Ray DVD with no problems with a Sempron!

I stand corrected on the mobo/chipset issue

Pardon my ignorance, but does IGP mean that I don't need a video card?

Thanks!
