i have read other forums and have found that you do not want to run the recovery console. This is fine, the only issue is after windows finds previous installs, i am not given the option to repair. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

When you see previous installations, are you typing "R"? for repair?
If you do not have any option to repair, take the drive out and install it as a second drive on a working XP computer.
Recover all your personal files and make a backup to DVD, CD, thumb drive, etc...
Then replace the drive into the non working computer, reformat the drive, reinstall you OS, your backed up files.
If nothing else is working, that usually does.

What's wrong with the Recovery Console? Oh well...

Setup found an existing Windows installation. The next step should offer a chance to repair it.

Do not format the drive.

Read everything.
