Hey guys,

My 7800 GT has died... GOOD RIDDANCE.

Now I have an excuse to upgrade.... My budget is $200-$230US.

What are your suggestions? I'm thinking the 8800 gt / 9600 gt.

I am an nvidia fan boy so please don't list any ATI cards. :p

hey,

The 8800gt will do you great!
For that price i believe you can get a 8800GTS 512 now.

The 9600GT is a great card, but if want to play some decent game for a while. Then opt for one of the other 2.

Depends on the resolution and quality you expect to play at really. 9600gt's can be found for 140 now while 8800gt's rund 190+... might not be a bad idea to price search for a gts 512either

if you are planning / (owning) to use 19" @ 1240 x you may use 96gt + a good lcd 1240 x, if you want use 22" it would be save to use 8800gt

I'm going to be using a 17" 1280x1024.

That 8800 gts @ $229 sounds amazing, do they ship to Australia?

thanks for the advice guys.

Make sure you get the 8800 GTS 512 with 512MB of ram. G92 core. The other versions are older and do not perform as well.

For 1280x1024 I would have to say 8800GS that I have seen on the Egg for about $110 after rebates and all that good stuff. If you still want a powerhouse I believe the 88GTS 512 can be found for $200 like people have mentioned. But to get a 8800GT for anything less than 1680 would be a waste. I 3dmark06'd my system with 88GT @ 1280 and 1920. The difference between the two was roughly 2k~2.5k points, and in reality it isn't that much of a drop, although its there.

Like most posts. 256 megs should be enough for up to 1280x1024. 512megs for up to 1920x1200, 1024+ megs for 2560x1600+. Anti Aliasing also uses a lot of video RAM, so you may want 512m for 1280x1024 if you do a lot of AAs.
Don't get below 256, even if you're just using Aero. I personally use Aero with 64megs on my notebook which usually runs fine. - except for running Aero with lots of windows open or running video in a window.

I still suggest the GT 512 or GTS 512 - Even though the slower/cheaper 9600GT will blow the doors off your old 7600. Newer games will need the added speed and memory.

The avatar is Tom Baker. Best known as The Doctor in a LONG running British sci-fi series called Doctor Who.
Tom is th 4th of 10 current Doctors.
These doctors are intended to look eccentric rather than creepy.
Tom also appeared in other movies/shows like Sherlock Holmes.
