I have an UltraDMA Maxtor HDD 40 gig right now and it is 8 yrs old. I wanted to know how it compares to IDE and SATA drives, is this before those types of HDDs or is it a part of those HDDs/

Thanks for any replies.

Your old drive is an "IDE" or "PATA" drive. The difference between it and a newer drive is incredible.

SATA has some advantages that PATA does not. If you have a SATA connector you should be buying a SATA drive.

The best balance between speed and size is the Western Digital 1TB Black. It is also very reliable and inexpensive.

UltraDMA is basically IDE. WD Black drives are a bit overpriced, rather get the Blue series if you're buying. HDDs only recently caught up to IDE's 133mB/s limit but SATA drives have better burst rates which can make a difference.
