asus gf 9800gxt -> bios updated, then lost 40% gpu performance.

Hi all:
firts of all sorry by my bad english ,its not my native languaje.....
here we go:
4 days ago y get my new asus 9800 gtx.



the system crashed continuosly, so , after 2 days ,i went to asus website and downloade a update for bios....
just When i installed update for bios and load bios default, the system preformance lost 40%.
Examples

3dmark 2006 testing
before : score 10500 2500 cpu 5000 sm2 5000 sm3
after : score 6800 2500 cpu 2500 sm2 2500 sm3

and crysis inthe same situation

before 28 fps
after 19 fps

all the suply cables all rightly conected
i think that there some bios parameter that i have to configure but i dont know how

all of this ,of course in a formated install of winxp 8i intalled 5 times in this days ), sometimes with actually drives, sometimes the old ones, sometimes with the old bios via jumper, sometiems new bios, but i cant reach the original performance level (105009, always obtain 6800,a lways the same.......so i thinks there must be a concrete cause...


actually i left behind the crashed problem because im too worried about the performance loss.
I solve the system crash later.

can anyone helpe me please????

check that the PCI-e 16x slot is working at the correct speed, it might have dropped to a 4x or even 1x with the bios update...

by the way, what's your power supply? wattage on the 12V rail(s)?

edit: I looked throught the mobos manual and didn't see the settings for changing the pcie slots speed, so it probably isn't that... or maybe I just missed it...

many peole said me that his 9800gtx works wuith this supply without plblem


in the other way , the bios pcie conf is my great problem , i search by 2 days for the 4x 8x 16x parameter, but i can´t found it too.....
i thought taht colud be in the
-pcipnp parameter (i dont know it is reffer to pci normal cards or pcie gpu!!!)
or the pci latency, qhich has values of 32 64 128 etc.....

im using now my old ati 1900 16x and it look like it work fine.....5600 on 3dmark , i thought that was the previous result, so im in fear of 9800 what broken on bios update, or need of a parameter specific that change on bios update nad make it slower

1- downloading programs and proceding to testing. but the asus doctor displayed good clocks frecuenzy. anyway i dot know what is happennig so proceding to test

2-i update the bios of motherboard...im not enought brave (aka mad, crazy ,suicidal,etc.....) to ,with my porr knowledge level, flash the gpu that bought 2 days before....and my sistem has not oc and never has been overclocked

Did you install all of the motherboard drivers? I've dealt with VIA and AMD in the past, and the 4 in 1 drivers sometimes fail to install all of the drivers. thats my only gripe about VIA chipsets, of course they could have fixed it.

Also the AMD Dual Core Optimizer(could help)

The only other solution i could think of is trying an older version of your bios.

done ,but nothing works
I come back to the version of bios that gave me the 10800 pts( the original performance) but i gat the same that new bios 6800...i asume that must configure smething inside bios,but i dont know what.
Thinking seriously in take a walk inside bios and touch options that must not been touched by a novice like me

Something to try.

Go in the bios and make sure cool n quiet is on.
Make sure the cool n quiet driver is installed and upto date
Set the power settings under display -> Screen Saver -> Power to Minimal Power Management.

Once I had cool n quiet on and the driver was on but my power management was reset for some reason. Even software reported my cpu running at the right speed is was slow as hell then i caught that and it was back to normal.

This was when the A64 first came out so i am not sure if this happens any more, but it was a VIA board as well....

Well the results show its def not the cpu(score is almost the same both times)

Before
3DMark Score - 10874 3DMarks
SM 2.0 Score - 4964
SM 3.0 Score - 5374
CPU Score - 2291

After
3DMark Score - 6820 3DMarks
SM 2.0 Score - 2795
SM 3.0 Score - 2856
CPU Score - 2283

Is there any beta bios you can try? I would try to flash back to the old one and see if its good again, then contact asus.

They did mess something up once for me with a bios update so i just went back one revision and i was fine.

NEVER FLASH IN WINDOWS...always dos(NOT FREEDOS) or the built in qflash if the board has it.

i have come back to the original bios, via jumper on motherboard and the performance is the one of the links...
look like when i update (or downdate) ,the bios conf defrault was no good for the 9800 (only supositions)

a question , what is fredos?? the command pront of win or something else?

i your opinnion, it ´s posible that agp has become wecked?? or in your xperience this is more like a incompatibility or abd config situation???

The jumper resets all settings. This only restores the defaults for that bios version

Flashing the bios actually writes new data(new version) to a chip on the board

FreeDOS is a DOS compatible command prompt, but its not 100% compatible so i strongly recommend against using it(i had a bad flash in it, lucky for me i recovered).

BIOS rev 2001 is supposed to try to fix problems with Geforce 8(i assume 9 as well) cards.

what version did you flash to? you can get that info from cpu-z or on the post screen

all solved.....by a weird way but solve


installing old bios makes the motherboard crash at reboot....it crash before the setup menu so i can´t do anything
taking money a running to my nearest pc dealer was the only option that i get

now i have a asus alivenf6p without via chipset, and the 9800gtx ha recover original performance...10900 3dmark points

now im going to play for a while, looking for crashes, that was the original problem with the other mb

Note to self

NO MORE VIA.

While i have never had issues with them in the past, this issue is just too much. Crashes or crappy performance...thats not a choice.

Had the same problem with my new 8800gtx+ (low performance about 6500 points)
reflashed the board with the old m2v1802 bios
Problem solved ;now I get about 8800 points with a AMD x2 4400 (still not speedy but ok)
