i know that raid 0 requires 2 identical HDDS right?question is do you need identical harddisks or a harddisk has bigger capacity than the present one for RAID 1?

You do not need identical harddrives, just the size is important. It should at least be as large as the other, although some RAID-implementations might react differently if one is larger than the other, which is frequent if you are skipping brands or models, 500GB is often slightly larger.

Hardware RAID systems employ a feature known as "Capacity Truncation" which can be set to Off/1GB/10GB for example, if set to 1GB it will 'round down' all capacities to multiples of 1GiB, so even disks slightly larger would gain the same used capacity. Software RAID systems may vary and also depend on the operating system used.
