Convert Vista 32 bit to 64 bit

I have read that you can use a key for 32 bit vista in a 64 bit vista DVD. I am hopefully going to be building a desktop around Christmas, and I don't think I can afford to buy Windows 7 if I want to get a decent PC. I have a 32 bit DVD of Vista, but I have heard that you can use a 64 bit disk and put in the code for the 32 bit version. Is this true? I would also like to know if there was any other way to do this and how I could get a DVD cheaply or for free. I will need the 64 bit so I can have 8gb of RAM. Thanks for any help!

You need to buy the 64 bit media to do the install. If the license is oem you will need to buy a new one,if it's retail you can use the 32 bit key on a 64 bit install.
