Hello,
I am having a problem with Vista explorer.exe going into a loop. Everything starts as normal until explorer.exe begins and it crashes, tries to restart and crashes again and again. I have tried sfc /scannow, repair and used malware and virus scanners for hours. The big problem is without using explorer.exe many options are not available. Is there any way to manually replace explorer.exe? Please remember that I can not use any part of windows that relies on excplorer.exe such as restore. I can run anything that does not rely on explorer including the task manager through which I can open a stable cmd console and see all the contents of my hard drive.

Any ideas here?

Bill

Try running in diagnostic mode. Take a look at this thread from another forum.

So it turns out this was one of those more serious problems. Kept getting worse and more symptoms showing up. Finally ran a Dell diagnostic and found my primary hard drive has problems. I replaced the hard drive and restored everything from backup. All is well except having to reinstall some programs from original. Thank the computer gods I ordered this laptop with a backup drive from the factory and all my data was backed up weekly. Very little data loss!!!

Thanks for your attempt at helping. Places like this make figuring things out much easier.
