I'm looking to buy a Sapphire HD 3870 XT and was wondering if a 600w PSU would do it with this setup :

E6550 @ Stock + stock fan
ASrock DVI MOBO
2gb @ 667
1 X 120mm case fan
1X 80mm case fan
MaXtor 250gb HD

Also, the PSU has 38A on the amps. I cant seem find any help regarding the Amps and power consumption.

PSU:  Arctic power 600w.

I'll keep that in mind. I think my PSU can just about cut it, but by only just.

Will the 9600gt be better perhaps. Does it have less NM?

Hmmmmnn i dnt know about the 3870XT .... but the radeon HD 3870 is faster than the 9600 ...especially at higher resolutions ... moreover, for the 3870 , 26A on the 12v rail is enough, even a 550W PSU is overkill...i recommended the Corsair 550vx cos its avail for a great price

Ahh, i think the 3870XT is exactly the same as the 3870 in terms of speed ( must be a manufacturer thing)

I'll sell my card and get the 3870. I'm using 1024x768 resolution, so using a DX10 card suited for resolutions like that should be my ideal thing.

I'll keep that PSU of yours in mind, but i'll firstly test out mine to see if it can withstand it

ok u need to know that the 9600GT performs as good as the 3870 (and sumtimes faster) than the 3870 for lower resolution than 1280*1024... and 9600 is cheaper than the 3870 at the moment

check these benchmarks

If you're going to evolve to a higher resolution in the near future then get the 3870, else go for the 9600.

Does it do well with other games other than crysis compared to the 3870?
For futures sake.

Is Inno3D a good make?

umm
i have 19A on the 12v rail. Is that just about stable?

Profile: old hand

In the link i sent...there is an option "jump to page"...lot of games there...

Inno3d is a good make..it got the award for the best GPU in Feb in an Australian PC magazine.

19A is not enough.......3870 needs 24A on 12v rail. Better get the Corsair 450vx.

What about the 9600gt?

Another card you may be interested in if your also probably gonna need a new PSU might be the 8800gs.  I think newegg has an overclocked version for 110 after rebate, which according to benchmarks, run with a 9600 or 3870 fairly evenly.

I'll order it and if doesn't work, i'll return it and save up for a new PSU and then order it again.

Its strange though. My x1950 pro said it needed like 28A on the 12v rail and it works a dream on my setup. Inno3d 9600gt said it needed like 26A on the 12v rail :S:S:S:S:S:S:S:S:S:S:S:S

you will end up damaging your rig.

I ordered a new PSU with 22A on dual 12v rails. I looked at reviews and people say they run Quads with 8800gts stable with it, so i should be all set.

Lets see what the 9600gt brings :D
