Building new rig.. Gaming mid-range.

New rig I'm planning to build. This is purely for gaming, specifically Age of Conan when it comes out. Computer will be used for nothing else to be honest. :sol:

Motherboard - GIGABYTE GA-EX38-DQ6 ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128326 ) [$270]

PSU - Corsair 620w ( http://www.buy.com/prod/corsair-620w-sli-certified-modular-atx-power-supply/q/loc/101/203270718.html ) [$200]

CASE - Antec 900 ( http://www.directron.com/ninehundred.html ) [$80]

CPU - Intel C2D E8400 3.0GHz ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115046 ) [$200]

CPU Cooler - XIGMATEK HDT-S1283 ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835233003 ) [$37]

RAM - OCZ Reaper HPC 4GB(2 x 2GB) DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227289 ) [$100]

GPU - eVGA 8800GTS (G92) 512MB ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130325 ) [$230]

HD - Western Digital 160GB 7200 RPM ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136075 ) [$48]

OS - Already have - Vista Home Basic - 64-bit

DRIVE - Already have - DVD RW plain simple drive

Monitor - Already have - 21 inch Gamer LCD (1600x1200)

(Resolution was ultimate factor when deciding on GPU. Figured if I wasn't going to play
above this rez, no reason in buying much bigger vid card, but pls, recommendations welcome)

Total $ spent - [$1150 ish]

I have couple questions though... :pt1cable:

RAM - This is also touchy subject. I am going to be OCing my CPU and I know that affects the RAM speeds. This is my reason for going with DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) over DDR2 800. Is this a smart buy?

I am looking for a stable RAM for Overclocking above anything else. Plus, I would love to see recommendations of what RAM has been proven to work well with my particular Motherboard if anyone has any. :D

I've spent quite a bit of time researching since I've been out of the loop for a good 4 years+. Build is solely for the purpose of playing video games as mentioned above. :D

As of right now GPU is probabaly going to be upgraded to a 9900 series and at that time possibly move up to a 24 inch Monitor if $ permits.

Please help me make up my mind about the few questions I have, and please tell me what you think of the build overall as a mid-range gaming rig.

Thnx Guys!!

    Great recommendations!

I am making the switch on the CPU cooler for sure. The CPU cooler you linked is raved about on Benchmark Reviews and tests to prove it.

As for the PSU, also looks like a great product, my only concern is if the 620w is enough for my system let alone future proof with a beefy 9900 GTX that im planning on trying down the road.

    Thnx for the help :)
  2. Why not go with a Tier 1 PSU like the PC Power & Cooling 750? I think its cheaper then the Thermaltake and better overall PSU.

    Check this out:

  3. Chuckcm's PSU and cooler is excellent. Its a misconception that a kilowatt psu is required for GPUs. Get it while its still available - its a stellar deal.
  4. while i agree with mihirkula 1000watts is alot & consider that you'll prolly want to protect it with a back up, between the 2 your looking at 300 bucks!!! easy

for your system i would recomend this (best bang for buck tier 1)
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817703005

these is more than enough watt's, single rail and the coolest & quietest running PSU i've seen.

    looks nice..

I never would have thought 610 watts would be enough.

I like the Corsair 620w also.

I'm still up in the air about my RAM.. I just want 4gigs of something thats gunna cause me the least trouble for OCing. Anybody know some RAM that fits that description? :D
  6. OCZ ReaperX HPC 4GB
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227278
Can only fit one kit because of the oversized heatsinks, thats why i recommend the 4gb version.
  7. One thing to consider with a new PSU is whether it'll have the right power connectors for your newer hardware. That usually means having a 8 pin CPU power connector and 8 pin PCI-e power connectors too. Here a good PSU that has both of those and many more to spare. It's $130 - $10 MIR = $120!!!
