Q9450, what is a reasonable expectation?

Here is my comp:
Asus Maximus Formula
Q9450
8gb DDR2 1066 OCZ Reaper
8800GTS (512mb)

I already have a seperate comp with an e8400 running @ 3.6ghz. That took no effort whatsoever. I think the only thing I did was set everything to "auto" and changed the FSB to 400x9 and then slowly lowered the vcore until it was stable. entire process took 45 min before I started running prime 95. In other words, no skill was involved.

I agree with cjl, but don't expect to get your 8gig of RAM running at 1066 - but you will earn serious bragging rights if you can... Good Luck.

If you clock it down like you suggested, it might work. I've never been willing to run mine at less than the stock "Ticks", which are 5-5-5-18-2T for my stuff. I've also never seen anyone claim to be running 8gig@1066 at these timings. But I'm interested in how it plays out: keep us posted , and I wish you luck. If you succeed, I'll pick up another 4gig for myself ;-)

Thank you for all the feedback. I had to RMA the cpu because at idle (before starting any oc'ing) my cores were at 32,32,71,73C. I am sure it is an issue with the heat sensors but either way I did not want to mess with anything.

For what it's worth, I had to unlink my ram from the fsb to oc my e8400. I could not get the same memory to oc at all with 4gb but as long as the voltage and timing were manually set I could get the 1066. timings were set @ 5,5,5,15 2T @ 2.1v.

update:

slight change to the config above:
Asus Rampage Formula
Q9550

My first OC is at 3.502 @ 1.272v. I haven't run prime95 yet. All I did was select "crazy" and this is what I got. I am interested to see the p95 12 hour results and then how far I can take this cpu.

Thanks again for all the info. I'll update this over the next few days.

well really how much difference do timings make? at 6-6-6-18 i got 12007 3Dmark06's. at 4-4-4-12 i get 12040. seriously. why bother? is it just a marketing scam?
