MY DOCUMENTS HAVE DISAPPEARED IN VISTA. FOR THE PAST 4 DAYS ON SHUT DOWN, IT SAYS THAT IT IS INSTALLING 7 NEW UPDATES

Do you allow the 7 updates to complete b/4 shutting computer off ?
Have you checked for virus / malware ? Don't delete any TEMP, TMP, TEMPORARY files until you resolve issue, as folder may have been moved to one of them & hidden by some malware. www.bleepingcomputer.com
has an "unhide" utility you can download to see if that is the case. If not, then a Windows restore to date before folder missing may resolve it.
