Connection icon disappears?

Connection icon in System Tray, sometimes it shows, other times not.
Have checked connection Properties and "Show icon in notification area" is
checked.

Wanadoo 1MB broadband using Speedtouch USB modem. Tried checking and
unchecking "Hide inactive icons". Makes no difference, it seems to come and
go as it pleases.
