My friend's Vaio Laptop won't boot in to windows, the ntoskrnl.exe file is missing, I've had a look around and I can't do a repair install or any of the other usual suggestions.
Running the Vaio diagnostics from the recovery disk show the HDD fails the Linear seek test, trying to recover using the recovery disk results in an error during it and to 'attempt recovery again'.
I've stuck my own XP disk in to attempt to format the disk and install windows but the drive will not format.
Would it most likely just be a case of needing a new hard drive?
