You can tell the author never played any of the previous games.

"The weapon selections for the various armor types are limited to a
maximum of three, in addition to the Energy Blade melee weapon. In the
previous versions the player could have as many as he or she wished,
which I have always thought to be rather unrealistic. In this version, a
person can take what a normal human probably would be able to carry. "

Yeah, I had a good long smirk at that one.

You honestly thought that "Toms Hardware" is a good site for reviews?

Nevertheless, many people read that site, and that review was very positive.

Yeah, it was. Other than a few statements that showed the reviewer was
a little unfamiliar with the Tribes franchise. But on a whole, I
thought it was very positive.

In fact, if I had not heard of or had never played Tribes before, I
might be so inclined after reading the article. Especially after
reading that I could download the original Starsiege: Tribes for free
from the Sierra site.

It's been a long time, but I recall Lights taking three, Mediums four
and Heavies five weapons max (or one lower for each?)

Is he on crack, or am I mistaken?

The fumes from his crack pipe were clearly evident from my POV in the
article. :)

It was a fairly accurate and encouraging review on a site that gets
heavy traffic for the enthusiast set. A little bit of exposure to
those who wouldn't necessarily be cruising gaming sites.

I just might have to install Tribes again for a bit of retro-nestalgia
after seeing the screenshots again. It's been about 2 years since I
last gave it a whirl.

Maybe if the reviewer hadn't picked some random mod to look at.....

No, he probably was just on Ultra Renegades or something.

Even UR limits you on how many you can have.

I'm not sure which mode I was playing. It was UR
XCVIIXIXIXIXIMMMLXXIIVIXXIXIMBCCCLLLDDLMXIIIVV or something, but you
basically spawned with just about every decent weapon in the game with
super-fast re-fire rates and loads of ammos. The worst part was that one
shot would pretty much kill you, so you pretty much never ran out of ammo.

Ah! Sounds like
Ultra-Super-Mega-Antidisestablismentarian-Uber-Quantum-Elite-Chronic-Conformist
Renegades.

That's the one where, when you spawn, you have infinite everything +1.
And all others die by sheer force of your proximity.

But don't dare call it an unbalanced mod! Because every time someone
else spawns, then everyone else dies too. How could it be more fair?

If someone died and then spawned and killed someone who in turn died and
spawned and killed someone, wouldn't everyone, therefore, be dead all the
time?

Yes! Exactly the brilliance of the mod! All dead people are equal,
therefore balanced! It's the most balanced mod out there.

Of course, only cool people play it. The uber-elite. All the neophytes
just play Base. BOREing.

My son loved it when he was 5.
