Currently I have a 550w Rosewill and I would like to upgrade to something very quiet and efficient because i am putting this in a antec p182 noise is an issue. I would like at least the same if not a little more wattage. Specs...

BFG 650i Ultra mobo
BFG 8800gts 512
E2160 @3.0ghz (might go quad later)
1 HHD and DVD drive
4 120mm fans in antec P182

totally agree with mihirkula... 600w is twice what you nee, that system will run fine with 300w, ~450w gives a nice margain for safety and the quad core upgrade you mentioned,

the quietest psu ive ever heard is the seasonic s12 380

http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=617999

anything in the seasonic s12 range will be very quiet, the crosshair psu mihirkula mentioned is also very quiet from what ive read in reviews

here is a good list of quiet psus which should be helpfull

http://www.silentpcreview.com/article699-page1.html

this website is dedicated to quiet PCs and has been very usefull in my own quest for silence... good look

I looked at the one Lord Gornak pointed out and it looked good, but a review said he had to remove the lower fan to get it to fit and I don't want to do that, which sucks. Thanks for the Silent PC Review site.....It got me looking at the Corsair HX520
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139001, it was second on the list. What do you guys think?

the hx520 should serve you well, as i said you could get away with 450w but 520w isnt a ludacris amount considering you may be upgrading in the future... i cant recommend it from first hand experience but the reviews ive seen were all very psitive minus one in which the reviewer had a whining sound coming from the unit, he was prolly just unlucky... it was a faulty unit i think.

i say go for it, it got a better score on the spcr site than the seasonic one i mentioned, and the seasonic one is almost inaudiable in my system so the hx520 must be even quieter.

let us know which one you go for and let us know how quiet it is.

good look.

Well i might go with the hx620 now, just because I want to "futureproof" a little. The only reason I would do this is because of the 9800gx2 type cards, which is the only way i can go sli with a single slot board like the 650i. There is only a $10 price difference where i will buy it and it is on the same level with Silent PC Review as the 520w version. Good enough reason to get the 620 for the reasons mentioned above?

well, if you plan to add a few hard drives, quad coe proc and x2 type gfx card the hx620 is worth getting i think.

the only reason not to go for the 620 version is that your system will prolly be a little less efficient, most psu's have high efficiency near the middle of their rated wattage but low efficiency at the top and bottom end of their range. so getting a 620w psu will mean that your system will prolly be near the bottom of its range most of the time thus makeing it less efficient, not a big deal really but thought id point it out.

its up to you but this article may give you a better idea of how much power you need for a range of systems

Keep in mind that: 2 hard drives, 2 disk drives, 2 8800GTS G92's, a Q6600, an a 750i mobo will not require any more then 500-watts under 3DMark06 or even full load. I second that VX550W. I bought it from the exact same site slightly cheaper. At that price you can't lose, especially when newegg sells it for $100. Still waiting for my $20 rebate though.... :|. Unless you're going to run SLI 9800gx2's you're not going to have a problem.

Well i got the 620 and it is pretty nice. Ran 3dmark to make sure everything was running ok and it actually dropped about 25 3dmarks on average.......... Is it possible for the new PSU to contribute to a slight lower score. I know we are talking fractions of a FPS but I am just curious. Thanks guys.

well i can almost guaruntee its not the psu's fault.. if its a small difference then its prolly just the fact that benchmarks never seem to give the exact same score, or maybe there was a background process eating up a bit of cpu performance in the most recent benchies you performend.

Well I tested the old Rosewill i started with and a OCZ gamexstream 700w and both got close to or slightly above 11600. With the hx620 and I just tried a TX650, the scores never go above 11580. I know this is a small difference but if i plan to upgrade in the future this psu difference somewhat concerns me. What could be the reason for this?

dunno wot the reason is, im noy really a benchmark expert but i know the psu will not be the cause.

psus can cause instability due to not providing enough current or the wrong voltage but ive never heard of a psu affecting performance before... nor can i imagine it would ever be able to effect performance, because when you lower the voltage to a cpu, graphics card e.t.c but keep the clock speed the same the performance doesnt change, the system may become unstable or shut down but it wont go slower, and if the voltage is increased, the performance stays the same but it just gets hotter...

very strange indeed, maybe you should start a new thread on this?

Yes this is strange, now it is doing it with the old rosewill. Maybe it is heat related, I mean it is going on summer and the AC is almost never on where I live. I think it could be a slight drop in either the ram or graphics card...
