im about to build a new gaming comp, mainly for online FPS and home theater
im still unsure about a few items but here it goes

running on Vista64 Home Premium

CPU: E8400
gonna overclock this thing to 4ghz

RAM: OCZ Reaper Hpc Edition pc2-8500 2x2gb ddr2 1066mhz cl5-5-5-15
gonna eventually(2years) buy another kit of those to get to 4x2gb, no overclocking

MOBO: evga 780i
im also gonna overclock the 333fsb to 400-450.. (gonna have to learn a bit more bout OCin 780i for E8400 to reach 4ghz)

GPU: planning to get a GOOD gf9... but none are out yet... ima wait for 9900 GTX or something like that and get another 1 of those 2years later for SLI rampage!

HD: Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 500gb
dont need more, got many other storages

PSU: OCZ GameXStream 700w
is that enough wattage??!

Is the casing important??! i was gonna get Coolermaster Elite RC-330 ATX
http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=20935
do i need something special for all i want? or any will do? i dont give a **** about the kewl blue light and sh!T! i want something cheap

i ll prolly need cooling for my CPU and MOBO+GPU maybe?
i have no idea of what fans or heatsinks or wutever to get though :( any suggestions?!
keep in mind that im OCing my CPU and my mobo's FSB, that will prolly be about it

i will be using this computer with samsung 226bw if it can help (if i can manage to make work the DVi... which i havent been able to yet)

tx a lot in advance for your opinions/expertise

400fsb won't get you 4.0ghz on the E84. You'd need 445 at least with the 9x multiplier.
I don't think SLi 9900GTX is a wise investment with a 22" monitor with 1680x1050 resolution.
Skip the X-fi.

Look for Centuiron 5 with an 80mm fan in front as well as the 120mm in back. 9600GT, 9800GX2, 9800GTX are all out. You'll be waiting a long time if you wait for next generation Nvidia cards. I wouldn't bother getting a creative card with Vista 64. On-board audio is pretty good nowadays.

i need to overclock to 445fsb so i can reach 4ghz? ok.. that shudnt be a problem
any self respectable FPS hardcore player will prolly never play on a res higher than 1024x768 , but if i can play with a 1680x1050 res at high setting and high FPS, that will be because i have sli GOOD GF9... the 3 current GF9 kindo sucks imo......
im still unsure about the x-fi... AZALIA (which is the onboard soundcard on 780i) might do the job....... x-fi is 100$ .. expensive

tx a lot both of you for your answers!!! really helps me!
any other thoughts anyone else?
tx in advance

What I mean is, you'll probably get more than 60FPS in most games with a single one @ 1680x1050. No need for a second one.

Then you are pretty much set.
I didn't notice this before, but you could just use the onboard gigabit lan. They get good enough performance for 99.9% of users :) No need to buy another one.

9800GTX should do fine, very future proof, especially if you go for a tri SLI board, 9900 will be a while. PSU looks to be enough. You will need to OC that memory though, Ive got 4 x 1GB of the same stuff, and it's fine for me at 450.

Your ram is 800MHz (PC2-6400).
As Two Bit Hit said above the RAM you are getting should overclock well.
You should get 1066MHz (PC2-8500) RAM if you don't plan on overclocking it for FSB 450MHz.

Skip the SLI motherboard, get a good P35 board and spend more on a graphics card.

Otherwise 9600GT is good enough for 22" currently and you can upgrade in a year without feeling sorry for your wallet.

sry for the edit chiadog!! tx a lot for the answer tho ;) i completely forgot there was a network onboard card :p

9800gtx is kindo sucky in my opinion...... its a 8800gtx for DX10... i guess we wont see any shining stuffs in gf 9series but oh well... i ll still wait for 9900
also, i think u cant tri SLI gf9s.. i thought u cud only do that with gtx and ultra from 8series, anyway i wont ever tri SLI......
I have a pretty big budget JUST for the GPU so I really want something that kickass, so i can kick some more ass when i SLI it 2years later!

"Your ram is 800MHz (PC2-6400).
As Two Bit Hit said above the RAM you are getting should overclock well.
You should get 1066MHz (PC2-8500) RAM if you don't plan on overclocking it for FSB 450MHz."

what u mean is that I should either OC my ram OOORRRR get some 1066mhz right? thats only if im OCing my 333fsb into 450 right? (450x2 =900 so 1066 would be the best for that right? also my e8400 will get to 4ghz with that)

im not very knowledgable with RAM and mobo :( but i d rather buy the stronger RAM than OCin it....
i have no problem OCin my cpu and the mobo tho

tx a lot once again for the answers both of you!!
still looking into wut kindo cooling i will need? heatsinks? case fans? or mobo fans? or cpu? confused

Three people said negative comments about an X-Fi in this post... anyone want to directly attribute their comments to what that Creative VP did on their forum... or is everyone just worried about the stability of Vista + X-Fi?

Yes. The RAM you choose needs to be overclocked (from 400MHz to 450MHz). That should be easy, but you may have to relax the 4-4-4-15 timings (with overclocking you never know).
Overclocking RAM is just as easy (or hard) as overclocking the CPU/Motherboard. You don't want to overdo it. OCZ has a good warranty policy and a voltage of 2.2V wont void your warranty.

Cooling : The best air cooler arround is the Thermalright Ultra-120 eXtreme and you need a 120mm fan along with it.
Check this article : http://www.anandtech.com/showdoc.aspx?i=2981
There are many cheaper coolers capable of cooling a 45nm dual core, so pick one that fits your budget.
Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 (Pro)
Scythe Ninja
Scythe Katana
Noctua NH-U12P (several review recently with awards)
ThermalTake Big Typhoon VX

Case:
The case you mentioned is Cooler Master Elite RC-330. You might want to add a 120mm front intake fan if it doesn't come with one. It should work fine. You could have some issues fitting long graphics cards as it's a small case.
Also check the Cooler Master RC-690 (it does have a blue led front intake fan for cooling your harddrives and provides excellent airflow).
I have a Cooler Master CAC-T05-UW (cheaper with an 80mm front intake and 120mm exhaust) and it keeps my quadcore under 50°C.

Vista drivers for X-Fi are reason enough to avoid it for now. He can always add it in later if they fix the issues.

As for their recent exploits ... they should hire Daniel_K for quallity assurance of their official driver releases instead of bashing him and calling him a thief (IMO).

I don't understand what you have against the current 9XXX series.

The 9800GTX and 9800GX2 are two of the best cards on the market right now...

It appears the 9series is more of an evolution to the 8series' revolution.
The largest performance "leap" appears to be the 8600GT to 9600GT.

The other naming choices for the G9* architecture are utterly silly.
Think of the 9800GTX as the 9800GTS (it's an awesome card it's just not a worthy successor to the 8800GTX) as it really is just an upgraded 8800GTS.

The (un)lucky owners of 8800GTXs/Ultras will just have to wait a bit longer.

wow tx a lot for all those answers!!!!!!!!
i ll stay away from x-fi for now i guess... its expensive and i wasnt sure at all so fck it!

im not sure what you are saying about the RAM...
if I buy some ddr2 1066mhz pc8500, i won't have to OC right? i dont wanna OC my RAM!...
so lets say i OC my mobo to 450fsb so i can OC my cpu E8400 up to 4ghz and at the same time, have some kickass dual channel 1066mhz RAM --- that make sens right?

the 3 gf9 out at the moment kindo sucks, as other people said they re slightly better than 8series... they re merely 8upgrades on dx10

aahhwww boredom eh? makes you do crazy stuffs, come on in, bring it on

Ah switching back to XP with X-Fi meant Awesome sound quality over onboard. Still even in vista the sound quality was much better then a SupremeFX II. The one problem i found was my music wasn't coming out of all of my 5.1 speakers, and EAX was somewhat... meh?

Well, they may suck in the sense that they aren't revolutionary jump in performance but they are still the best cards out.. If money isn't an issue then it doesn't make sense not getting the best cards out just because they aren't as good as you hoped. :D

Especially since you said you aren't going to be playing at higher resolutions then 1680x1050. The 9800GTX is a really great buy for that area of resolution. Plus, those 9800 GTX will be dropping in price soon I'd imagine.

I didn't see negative comments?
He wants x64 vista and Xfi doesn't play nice with it. With only OpenAL supporting 3d audio acceleration doesn't seem worth the dough.

I just noticed the 9900 arent coming out before Q3 so yeah i guess i ll be getting something else, and buy some 9900 when its price drops... maybe some 8series or 9600gt?

wut ur sayin bout vista64 is the the onboard soundcard and vista will give me a very decent sound quality right?

my kind of last question is about the powersupply... is 700w enough wattage for OCed 780i and E8400, 4x2gb, SLI GF9900, etc etc ?

tx a lot ONCE AGAIN to all of you! ;]
