I have a maxtor 300ro ide hdd. Sometimes when accessing the drive it will stall and the hdd makes a sound as if its booting up sounds like a powercycle. Is there anyway of stopping this from happening my next step is to run a spinrite test on it but itd take like 3 days to complete.

Is your maxtor new? It sounds like there's a defect with it. I suggest you have it checked out by a qualified technician. I hope you've also backed up your data.
