Hi guys!

I need help on deciding.

I was supposed to build my new rig a few weeks ago but unfortunately, the store where I was supposed to buy my rig from ran out of stock on the mobo I wanted :( . They told me to wait a few days up to a week for them to replenish it :( :( . They have other mobos on stock and from the list, these are the two mobos I will be choosing from:

  • Gigabyte X48-DQ6
  • Asus Maximus Formula

They are about the same price here in where I am at.

I did a little research and both mobos have their own issues like:
Most Giga mobos have the DPC Latency issues and some have encountered memory problems as well.

Most Formula mobos have isues with SATA DVD ROM Drives (I dunno if this has been addressed) and some also encounter cold boot issues.

I am looking for a build to las me a few years (based on my upgrade pattern, I upgrade every 5 yrs! lolz! :na: ) and I am looking for a mobo to last me that 5 years without any hassle.

Which one is better? Do you know any bugs that these 2 mobos have? That will be my deciding factor.

Any response will be appreciated.
Thanks peepz.

Sounds like a similar concern as mine, X38 vs X48 vs P35. Then there is also the consideration of nvidia 790, which would be preferable but only if DDR3 RAM prices start dropping soon.

As far as the Gigabyte X48 vs Asus Maximus, I've been researching them quite alot lately myself. I haven't really heard much about the DPC latency issues, but the Gigabyte sounds very reliable. The Asus, from my research seems that it could be a bit more temperamental and buggy. It seems all manufacturers have RAM matching issues with these chipsets. You should be able to find suitable RAM match for either by checking others builds on forums and New Egg's user reviews.

I have been checking reviews from Newegg and buyers rated both 63-68% 5 eggs. You might want to research about the DPC latency issue about the Giga boards. Some users are still sufferng from that up to now. Aside from that, the only thing I hate about the X48 is the back plate :na: . I might have some difficulty installing aftermarket coolers.

Any Formula users here? I just want to know if the NB is unusually hot. I have read reviews from Newegg that the NB of this board is a bit warmer than usual.

Thanks!

Just for today

Formula user here. It might be that NB is a bit warmer, yes, but nothing scary. As of right now, it's 45° C and I just played some Crysis and I have no special cooling. I think if you are really bothered get a side case fan and it'll be enough.

Now.. what you really wanna worry about is not the NB temp, but your Ram speed. Asus claims this board will run 1066 - 1200 Dual Channel.. yeah, right. Check out their forums for the Max Formula, its filled with users (like me) who can't get a stable system with faster-than-800 Rams. I just purchased a Patriot Extreme Performance 1150mhz PC2-9600.. I suffered for days and all I could get was 1013mhz out of it with a stable system. Above that my system will reboot at even the simplest task. Above 1060 it'll not even load windows, gives me the blue-screen and reboots... over 1120mhz.. ugh... don't even wanna know... let me just say I had to format my HD.

Asus costumer support is an astonishing thing however, they've gone through all the trouble to answer one of their costumer's email by saying: "We do not test memory" .... That's what I call good care for their costumers.. Way to go Asus. :sarcastic: :sarcastic:
The memory shows no sign of problems, tested with Memtest 3.4, looks fine. The guys at Patriot forum are giving me a hand, but I doubt they'll fix it. I've tried zillions of bios setting to no result. 1013mhz it is for me.

Anyway... don't worry about NB temp like that, if you are too zealous get a case fan and it'll be more than enough.

At least that's my experience...
