I cannot get my external hard drive fully installed on vista

I plugged the external hard drive in correctly and Computer showed a new removeable disk. The instructions then said " An icon for online plug should appear on the lower right corner of the status bar. (new hard-disc should be divided into sections with FDISK first, then its icon will appear and normal operation can start after formatting)" I did not get any thing appearing, and what is the status bar? I am lost and hoping someone can help. I am using Vista.

Status bar is bottom of screen, start orb, windows that areopen. Far right side, system tray (where icon will appear.) It is asking you to Partition the drive and format with fdisk. If you are not familiar with its use, you may want to use a 3rd Partition Manager, like Easeus to do it.

rather than fdisk it is recommended to use Disk Management.
