Max highest Clock cpu

I am kinda curious is there a maximum that could reach a cpu in term of ghz ? I know that in most case is the motherboard that will fail but if the board could fallow the speed.

well the highest overclock was around 8.1 GHz on a pentium 4. Basically there is a chip on the motherboard that dictates how often the transistors in the CPU can switch. With each switch more heat is produced and more energy is needed to make the switch. The reason that we hit barriers in overclocking is that one of the parts on the MOBO doesnt support very high clock speeds. Also, it is very hard to cool a processor that is highly overclocked (which is why they use liquid nitrogen.) If the board could support super high speeds and it was easy to cool the CPU, high clock speeds are really not out of the question. However, getting over the first two hurdles is really hard.

In theory, the Netburst architecture was good for at least 10GHz, given sufficient power and cooling. In reality, the limit was hit at around 8GHz for Netburst, and modern Core architecture is limited to 6.5GHz or so (these are numbers with ridiculous cooling btw).

yeah, but the performance and added cores of the Core 2 architecture more than made up for the slightly slower clock speed of netburst. epic outperformed :lol:

Oh yes - I'm not saying the Netburst was the fastest, just that it had the highest clocks.

not like any of this is important, unless you have ln2 lying aroung your appartment (and even if you do, it's not like you can play games while using it!!). The question you should ask is, what is the highest freq YOU can achieve at home with parts you can find in the neighborhood PC shop. You can get at about 4Ghz (new 45nm core2) at air with very good cooler and maybe 4,5-4,6 on water. That should be enough for whatever you use your PC for.

make a custom water cooling setup and OC 24/7. That would be the best

How about phase change? Seen a couple in a specialist shop in town. They should give a high, usable day-to-day overclock.
Just got to turn them n 5mins before you boot up.
