Bought a HD3870 (Diamond) and when I go to play COD4, it crawls. I never had this problem with my 1950xt. I was able to play a map once with no problems, but as soon as the map changed, crawled to a stop. I'm using the default "optimized" settings too. The same settings my 1950xt had don't work either.

I was able to run 3dMark06 with no problems at all, worked great. Going to pick up rainbow six vegas 2 tomorrow and hope that works but I'm wondering if I should return the card for a replacement or find out if there is another issue going here.

I'd agree with Shadow most likely gfx drivers need reinstalling. Or maybe a game .ini hasn't re-optimized for the new card, just a matter of re-installing (BF2 was a good example of that).

Sorry, here's my specs:

CPU: C2D E6400
RAM: 4gb DDR2 5400
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L
PSU: Antec Earthwatts 500w

When i first installed the 3870 I used catalyst 8.2. Then updated to 8.3. Then went down to 7.12 (3870 release drivers). Now i'm using the omega drivers.

I haven't tried reinstalling the game so I'll give that a try.

I've tried Warcraft 3 and EVE-Online... and 3dmark06, as mentioned before. I'm reinstalling COD4 right now and i'm also going to install Oblivion after that.

Well, reinstalling COD4 gave me a different symptom... My computer restarts now as soon as the map finishes loading -_- I changed drivers and installed the COD4 patches with no luck.

I'm installing oblivion to test. I will let you know how that goes.

Oblivion is fine after patching it. Works great as well... Wonder what the hell is going on with COD4 :\

That's strange too, because the game seems to be really stable and well-programmed / scalable.

Be persistent, I'm sure you will figure out what's happening soon!

I had the same problem. Download the latest DirectX iteration, and you'll be fine. I'm running a 3870 with CoD4 and it's running smooth as silk. Only a little choppiness with multiple helicopters in the air.

Ok, i got it working (mostly...). I reinstalled DirectX with no luck. So I uninstalled the game, drivers, and the device. Reinstalled directx, reinstalled the device with Cat 8.2 and its working, so far. Only problem so far is that i got a stop error when i exited the game... gona run some memory tests tonight but i hope its all good.

Thanks for the help.

Nope they don't suck. I play COD 4 online at complete maximum on 1920 by 1200 at 40+ fps. Tiz two 3870's in crossfire , but bout same as 3870x2.
