i breezed through this forum but did not see anything about possibly using a memory stick to burn cd and dvd (.iso) images to. just a quick question to see if anyone has tried this with success before i spend a lot of time trying it.

There is no way that I know of to burn a bootable (iso) image to a thumb drive. you can try to create a disc, then copy all of the files (including the hidden ones) to a thumb drive, and attempt to boot that way.
