Hello. So when my cousin bought his laptop it came with windows 7 home premium 64 bit. Of course, some of his old discontinued proggies he uses daily dont work under windows 7. I know win7 professional has xpmode, but he has win7 home premium. Is there any way to run a virtual machine running xp in windows 7?

Best solution

Yes. What you can do is download a copy of the Windows XP Mode installer, then take the extracted vhd file and load it into a free alternative, like VirtualBox.

Download and install VMlite. Use the VMlite wizard, it will download xpmode for you and setup it as well. Few mouse clicks and xpmode is ready to run. (this is virtualbox customised for xpmode).
