So i quickly found out that a qx9650 + 2 x3870 + 2x 150gb raptors in a raid will not run overclocked with an antec trio 650w psu.

What will it take to safely run this configuration

10 fans inside an antec 900 case

2 raptors

2 HD 3870's

2 DVD burners

2 2gb pc2-8000 ram modules

tuniq tower 120

qx 9650 o/c to 4.4ghz

Thanks for everything guys.

Any 750W or greater PSU should have no problems running this.
Since you're phil-T-rich go for a Corsair HX 1000W for $300.

Don't forget the surge protectors. :D

Lol, good one Andrius, what make you think 750w will do it, btw, i just save my money thats all and buy something when I have the money but I do have a good job, and its pretty sweet, but not much money when I am going for full custody of my little guy, lol but then again I do have nice things, thanks for making me laugh, the calculator says I need 1200w, my darn machine wants to take a dive all the time now but runs ok at 3.6 ghz with one 3870 doesnt reboot all the time now but will sometimes, it sucks b/c that antec 650w was darn good.

Reply to steeda

Your current PSU should run it, does it reboot alot?

Full System QC 3.0GHz (120W) + HD 3870 + 1HDD + ODD = 300W (350W for margin of error)

HD3870 has 2 power connectors so : max 225W
Another HDD and ODD : max 30W
10 fans let's go with : max 30W
120W CPU (1.5xOC) ~ 250W upper limit

350+225+60 = ~600W
add 150W for OC
600 + 150 = 750W

if you think I missed anything important let me know (it's 5:30 AM here).
TIP1: save money on the CPU.

well, I have 6 120mm fans, 1 200-250mm fan

i tried but i wanted more with the qx 9650 instead of another q6600/9450/9550

Reply to steeda

Andrius, you kill me, guy, i have been laughing at you or with you for 2 weeks now, you have been answering all my posts, go ahead and pick out a psu from newegg for me and ill probably buy it.

Reply to steeda

^Sorry about that. ;)
I haven't really shopped for anything that expensive. I don't game much.
QX9650 deserves a good PSU. Tier 1 or 2. I like the Corsair (it's modular and rated for 3way 9800GTX SLI) so it's pretty much frist class. You could also pick up an Enermax Galaxy 1000W or something. I really don't think you need more. If you plan to upgrade to HD4870x2 CF you probably will need more than 1kW. :heink:

About the fans:
Antec 120mm TRICOOL fans are rated at 3W.
Antec Nine Hundred's 200mm top fan is rated at 4W.
The 250mm silent case fan is rated at 11W.
Most Silent 120mm are rated at 1W.
I guess 30W was a good call.

that sucks b/c i an thinking about it, so what if i am, i should go 1000w, i was thinking of a quattro 850w, i really love antec, they have always been good to me until my next build everytime. it seems when i upgrade i always have to get a bigger psu

Reply to steeda

i just looked at that psu by cosair, but it doesnt look modular on newegg

Reply to steeda

what about this

ABS Tagan BZ Series BZ800 ATX12V EPS12V 800W Power S

Reply to steeda

Corsair HX 1000W is modular:

http://enthusiast.hardocp.com/arti [...] VzaWFzdA==

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6817139007
Some cables are always attached so they are not modular (MainATX, EPS12V, ...).
Don't know about Tagan. They value themselves highly but I haven't read any really high flying reviews of their units. I wonder why that is.

Reply to Andrius

I cant afford a 300$ psu, im looking to spend around 100-200$ for a psu, i found your cosair psu for 105$ us dollars shipped to my house in boise, idaho

Reply to steeda

oh yeah, found a quattro 850w for 150$

Reply to steeda

How about this 1kW climate warmer ? 215 after MIR and it's a tier 1 unit.

Reply to Andrius

you really think i need that much power, that is a good price but still out of my buget

Reply to steeda

I don't know. I don't need a 1kW PSU. The 620W I got is way overkill for me. I like the flat black cabling and the black paint + red sticker (too bad noone makes a black/white/red motherboard :D). Like I said I think a 750W will do if it's a quality unit. As for HD 4870 X2 CF ... who knows. You'll probably need a tank turbine engine to power that.

Reply to Andrius

lol, your killing me this week, I found a 1000w quattro for 170$ shipped to my house, but i think a 850w psu will do it, I wont be running 4870x2 in crossfire but i will be running 2x 4870's in crossfire since i went ati this time, first in 8 yrs, but after benching with one 3870 and a q6600 I got a 14800 in 3dmark06 and 20k with qx9650 in crossfire at 4ghz

Reply to steeda

250W per graphics card should be enough for HD4870 I think (I sense a 640kb dejavu). Leaving 350W for the rest of the system ...

My rig scores 12.500 marks early morning. 11.800 in the afternoon. And 11.500 after midnight. And that drops by 1000 points if I don't reboot for 2 days.

Thats a pretty massive OC....I dont think a new PSU will help

It's QX9650+X48. If you give it enough power it'll run a galaxy class starship in real time and run Crysis with Crossfire on the other 3 cores.
And the heat can be used to heat the local town's water supply.

Reply to Andrius

i got it to 4.8ghz but i was using 1.75v, 4.4ghz with 1.55v and all day long at 1.45v, this is in the bios mind you, i think the x48 will give me a 23k vs 20k on 3dmark06 b/c of the pcie 2.0, the only thing that is bad about the cpu is that it gets really hot and i try to keep it under 70c but it will run all day at 80c so if i get 1.55v that seems to be my limit at 70c and so it is 4.2-4.4ghz but for benching im trying for 4.6-4.8 but now i have to get a good psu, my ram is sweet gskill pc2-8000 2x2gb, it will read 9600 write 8700 and copy at 8600 but i cant get a good multi with my p35 since i blew the first 2 channels on the ram and the system is unstable right now since it happened, rma ing the mobo and selling it on ebay

Reply to steeda

so what is it 850w quattro for 150$ or 1000w quattro for 170$ and what do u guys think of these psu's

Reply to steeda

XS Tier 3. Good but not best. I'd say go for it (1kW).

these are antec psu's

Reply to steeda

Maybe I'm missing something, but I ran the PSU calc and even with 20% capacitor aging included I top out at 640W.

Reply to randomizer

^You're not missing anything. I made high estimates of everything. ;)
225W for graphics and 350 for the rest of the system (with an extra large margin of 250W for CPU overclocking). I said 750W would be enough. But for the sake of HD4870 Crossfire I said a liberal upper estimate of 1000W...

Reply to Andrius

Hey randomizer, don't bother. They're not going to listen. Just sit back and chuckle.

orangegator, answered his question already, it was rebooting, if you read the post above that, I indicated that, I think im going with the corsair b/c of andrius, i found it for 105$ shipped to my house, is this the psu

http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-Corsair-TX [...] dZViewItem

Reply to steeda

^This is a great unit but it's not modular. It should be powerful enough.
I was keeping "backup" 100W for future upgrades like HD 4870.

Everything else was sheer lack of reason because I don't know how to justify getting a 1kW unit.

When giving advice about PSU I like to play it safe. I think graphics with 2 8 pin connectors can take a maximum of 275W if they are to remain PCI-E v1.x compatible. HD 4870 likely will have 1x 8pin + 1x 6pin. Upper estimates for everything reach around 750W. It's gonna be close but the Corsair is a high quality unit.

Reply to Andrius

its 65$ more but it seems future proof since i will not be upgrading my mobo cpu or mem anytime soon

Reply to steeda

The Antec is XS Tier 3. It's a quality powersupply.
For a 1000W unit it's a steal at this price.
I'll quoute myself (hell I even have an ego :D)

what do u mean by XS Tier 3, and how do i find out what brand is tier 1 and what size

Reply to steeda

That's a list of TIERED powersupplies from Xtreme Systems.
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forum [...] ostcount=2

If I recall correctly the Antec Quattro is an "Antec TruePower" series PSU so Tier 3.
The comment for this Tier is :
"Tier 3 Brands - High Quality and Stability, Second Only To Tier 2 Brands"

I found it, sorry, i could have looked it up before i asked the question. Ok I am looking at them right now and searching for the best price on tier one psu's, i wish i would have seen this last night but glad that i saw it before i ordered

Reply to steeda

It's not really a busy afternoon here. At least I had something to do. ;)

I doubt it'll get much better than the Galaxy 1kW for $230. But you could get lucky.

ok i cant decide, b/c toms gave the quattro a silver star and this seems to be my best buy for a 1000w for 169$, do u think ill go wrong with this

Reply to steeda

No. I think the Antec 1kW unit is a steal at that price.
The Enermax Galaxy for $230 is very good value, but it doesn't come close to the Antec ($65 is 40% at this price).

But you should also consider that maybe it's not just the PSU that's causing the reboots (like Randomizer said) the 1.4GHz overclock is quite massive. If it runs stable with 1 HD at that speed it is indeed the PSU.

Reply to Andrius

i ended up getting this

pc power & cooling 750w silencer from newegg for 120$ after rebate

Reply to steeda

A great buy. Gets my thumbs up. I hope it solves the reboot issues.
EDIT : Did you get the CrossFire edition (has 6+2 pin connectors)?

i got this one, it has 4 x 6 pin

is that a big deal

Reply to steeda

^I'm not really sure how big a deal this is. If I recall correctly the 9800GX2 is quite sensitive to this. I'm not sure how ATI cards handle this as I haven't had an ATI card in about 4 years (never one with an external power connector). It might limit overclocking abilities but that should be it.
