Well, I built my system and it ran just fine for about a day. Booted it up this morning and it doesn't POST. The LCD poster with the motherboard says "CPU INIT" which just stands for CPU initialization. Here's my specs:
Motherboard: Asus Striker II Formula
CPU: Intel Xeon E3110(Basically the Wolfdale 8400)
Cooler: Zalman 9500
Ram: OCZ Reaper PC 8500 DDR2 1066 (4x2gigs)
GPU: BFG GeForce 9800 GX2
PSU: PC power and cooling Quad 750Watt
Here's what I've tried:
-Various ways to clear the CMOS. Jumper, remove battery, even leave the battery out for 3 hours and then try again
-Tried all the ram slots with one of my OCZ cards as well as a cheap 512Mb, 667hmz stick in case the ram voltage was the problem
-tried switching PSU's. The one I have listed is the second PSU I've tried, first one was the stock one(actually two) that came with my Antec P190 case. I think they are one Neo-Link 650 watt and one 450 watt linked.
-tried all 3 video slots with every combination of ram
No matter what I do, it won't get past CPU INIT. Nothing on the monitor, no beeps(I have hooked up the optional case speaker now as well). Any ideas?! Needless to say, I am beginning to get more than a little p*ssed off....
Maybe get hold of Asus, sounds like you've eliminated almost all other options, and I would have to say I don't think I've ever had a dead cpu. Could be you got a bad one. Are you sure your mobo is not shorting out against your case anywhere?
Roadrunner has a good suggestion. Make sure all power connections are tight. Try taking it down to ram, cpu, and video, then try to run it like that unplug all drives and unnecessary cards, then add your drives and cards back 1 by 1, then you know if it's a card, or indeed your mobo.
Well, I have tested the motherboard both in the case, and outside the case(made sure to use a grounding wrist strap, and putting the mobo on cardboard). I have also taken it down to the the video card, processor, and one stick of ram, and tried re-inserting the power connectors several times. Thanks for the quick replies though. Any other ideas? :S I'll probably try asus tomorrow
Well it's been a little while and had a few developments. Took it in the first time and the processor was actually bad. what are the odds of that... so got a new processor and a week later the exact same thing happened. this time the processor is still good but the guys at the shop are stumped. They can't find anything wrong with any of the components but they figured that they can take everything apart (take processor out, board out of case, etc), then put it back together and it works about 50% of the time. So we're running a few more tests (stress testing etc) to see if we can narrow it down to something (probably the motherboard?) and then I can return it and get a new one.
