Hey guys (and girls),

Recently upgraded my graphics card from a Sapphire ATI Radeon 9800 Pro to a Sapphire ATI Radeon X1650 Pro in order to get more out of games etc. etc. etc. My monitor is an LG L226W, and has been for a while.

The monitor worked absolutely fine with the 9800 with no problems at all. As soon as I installed the new X1650, I'm experiencing varying degrees (extremely bad in games and fast action side-to-side movements in films) of green and purple ghosting along dark edges of objects. As you can imagine, this is really annoying. I've searched everywhere for information on this, but everyone else's problem seems to be with the monitor. I know mine's not, as it was working fine before the graphics card upgrade.

I've reinstalled Windows, DirectX, latest drivers for the card, and tried tuning the monitor's colour balance etc., but nothing seems to help.

Can anyone think of what might be causing this, as it is such a shame to spend money on a nice new card and have it cause problems! Please reply :)

Thanks,
Steve.

you down graded, nice new card?

1950 is old tech
2850 is nice new card, a 3870 is a good card
a 2900 pro is a good card, at a low price
what did you expect? you went one down and 2 back from the present - the fact is the 9800 is a good card

9800 is a 800 as in 1800 or 2800 (ok a 2900) or 3800

1650 is a 600 as in 9600 or 2600

1600 cards where never good cards the 1950pro is a good card!

No, I have an AGP slot on my motherboard. The 9800 was released years ago - http://ati.amd.com/products/radeon [...] mpare.html, and the X1650 was released much more recently (note the 'X' in front of the number) - http://ati.amd.com/products/RadeonX1650/specs.html.

It's definitely not a downgrade, so that's not the problem.

If it helps, I've tried altering the monitor refresh rate to 75MHz but no real changes. I'm using DVI input as well so it can't be a crappy analog signal... cry! Anyone else got any ideas?

Maybe it's the VGA driver?

It's not a downgrade, but it's not much of an upgrade to play current on 22" LCD. The 9800Pro was a nice card, and no matter of X1650Pro being released couple years after it's still not much better card(a bit yes,but not that much).

change your card to a HD 3600 AGP series.. and that should solve your problems

Just cos its newer doesnt mean its better.

How come a 1999 Subaru STI is still faster to 0-100 than the current model, and only a FEW bhp behind? Its 9 years older it should get its arse KICKED!

The card 'should' perform ok. Try an app that removes drivers, then reinstall.
Apart from that, mebbe borrow a 2xxx or 3xxx series card, or even a GOOD 19xx card.

These new 'cheap' cards from ati/nv are actually garbage, ur better off with a GOOD older gen 2nd hand card off egay.

Hi Storpey

Looks like a clasic case of driver coruption to me. Probably because you replaced an ATi Card with a newer model. I have that card (AGP version) and used it for quite a while and had no problems with it. I'd suggest removing all the ATi drivers from your computer as competely as possible. Make sure you install .net 3.0 before reinstalling any drivers as the Catalyst suite has issues if its not there. After you have done that install the latest video card drivers downloaded from AMD. Your problems should be gone.

Hmmm well I reinstalled my entire system including windows, formatted both disks etc. and installed the new drivers fresh, after .NET framework :( and it's still happening.

It's weird, usually just when moving side to side in games, loads of edges ghost. I suppose I could try putting the old card back in, but it's back at home and I can't get to it for 8 weeks.

As for 'newer isn't always better', this new card is way better in terms of framerates and graphics settings capability, but it's just this little bit of ghosting that's the problem. Cooling isn't an issue either btw.
