I am trying to put 3x 1.5 TB Seagate hard drives into Raid 5 through my A8N-SLI Deluxe mobo.
Now when trying to put them together into RAID 5, they are limited to 746 gig. I then try to increase the size and then it goes back to 1 gig. Based on the rule for RAID 5, I should be closer to 3 gig. I have the latest bios drivers installed.
Using the Silicon Image 3114R controller right?
746GB is the limit for it unfortunately.
And I would strongly recommend not to use those semi-software RAID5 solutions unless you can find a replacement controller easily (which for 3114R is not easy) if the motherboard fails or if you need to migrate the array to another computer.
Although I'm using a Dell PERC 5/i myself I've tested Windows Server 2008 software RAID5 implantation with 3x1TB ST31000340AS and write performance actually isn't that bad compared to semi-software solution like Intel Matrix RAID if all you use it is for purely archiving data.
