Ram and overclocking importance

I am building a new rig and plan on overclocking it a bit. After doing my research and asking advice, I was told to get 1066 over 800 ram because the increase in speed will show an improvement in OC potential. I was wondering why this was and how much of a difference it would make. Any resources and/or explanations would be very much appreciated.

I will be using the Gigabyte UD3P and an E8400 if that has any influence on any advice. Thanks a lot everyone.

This is because RAM runs a certain ratio with your FSB. If you would have DDR2-800 memory you are not guaranteed to reach FSB heights of 533, but with DDR2-1066 you know for certain you are capable of reaching that.

533x2 = 1066 = DDR2-1066

DDR2-800 C4 memory can 9 out of the 10 times run DDR2-1066 C5. If it is DDR2-800 C5 memory dont expect to reach a FSB higher than 450.

Priv hit the nail on the head - Though keep in mind you could very well unlink your RAM to CPU ratio and keep stick with 800hmz.If you do plan on getting 1060mhz RAM, make sure your mobo supports it. I made the mistake once of not checking, and my board wouldn't even post with the new RAM.

Have fun OC'ing
